86. Brewery Ommegang, Cooperstown, NY

10 08 2012

Cheers to this place. When we arrived there was a sign that said “Closed To The Public.” We’d checked the times for tours and were there right on time, so we drove in anyway. There was a big tour bus and they were setting up a stage. We sort of stood in the parking lot, not knowing what to do. A guy drove up in a golf cart and told us they were closed. We told him we’d driven from Maine to have a beer, and being the sort who understands that sort of behavior, he went and got us beers and recommended we enjoy them in the parking lot. We did. It pays to show up before security sometimes… A few minutes later our boy came back and gave us tickets to come back that evening and see Lyle Lovett. I’m not a fan or anything, but we were on vacation so why not? We had a great time, the show was good and the beer was great. This is a good example of why the list is awesome: buy the ticket, take the ride. Long story short, Brewery Ommegang is one of my favorite breweries after this experience. Big enough to produce a consistent quality product, small enough to love beer and be awesome.
